The cause of the pain should always be treated and if that is stress than that has to be addressed. You should independently investigate methods of coping with stress and maybe talk to a counselor or therapist if the situation is that bad.

In the meantime, learning to more effectively cope probably won’t immediately cure your back pain. Do you sit at a desk a lot? Leaning over a keyboard or desk can definitely contribute to stiffness and knots in your upper back and you should make sure you have proper posture and are comfortable when you are seated.

Over the counter anti-inflammatories like Ibuprofen (motrin) or Naproxen (aleve) can be used as well as heat and stretches but if these are ineffective than you should see a doctor so this is addressed before it gets worse. The doctor may prescribe skelatal muscle relaxers (flexiril, soma, skelaxin) or benzodiazepines (valium, xanax, klonopin, ativan) which are for anxiety and may help both with your stress and with muscle spasm/stiffness. These types of medications can be very effective but are really only appropriate for the short term hence the necessity for techniques to cope with stress IF that is the cause.

Lastly, I am very skeptical of chiropractors that simple use manual techniques… they really should teach you how to prevent and self-treat and if they are just adjusting you, that will most likely lead to you needing further treatment because it doesn’t address the causes. The best thing that you can do is find the cause and treat that.
