sciatica overweight

Sciatica is a medical condition brought on due to complications affecting the Sciatic Nerve. Running from the lower Spinal Cord to the rear of each leg is the Sciatic Nerve.

When there is compression of this nerve or nerve roots the patient will generally find various symptoms with varying degrees of pain.

Sciatica is an extremely common condition and the symptoms are:

Tingling and or numbness down the leg

Weakness and or difficulty in leg movements

Pain on one side of the buttocks

Severe pains that may make it difficult to stand

Pain, discomfort, numbness in feet.

It is accepted that the further down the leg the symptoms are the more severe the nerve compression or issues.

The pain from Sciatica is full range, from mild tingling to debilitating pain that causes sufferers major discomfort and movement impairment.

There are many other factors that affect Sciatica such as standing or siting in a certain position, being overweight, lack of regular exercise and poor posture particularly during sleep.

I suffer periods of Sciatica and have found the McKenzie exercises to be most beneficial.

These exercises are performed by keeping the hips, thighs and legs on the floor and pushing up on the arms in the same manner as a press-up.

This curviture of the spine eliviates the symptoms by decompressing the nerve.

One should always be careful though and it is always advised to contact your medical professional for assessment.

However there is a condition called Cauda Equina Syndrome which is rare but very serious. Unlike other causes Cauda Equina Syndrome or CES can cause permanent damage to the bowel, bladder and contribute to sexual dysfunction.
