pain relief during labor and delivery

Did you use any pain relief during labor? How long was labor for you?

Many, many years ago when I had my first child they gave me a shot of Demerol during my labor. It made me so tired I could hardly hold my eyes open and almost missed the delivery. So with my next 4 children I didn’t use any means of pain relief. Luckily I had short labors because I don’t know if I could have gone much longer without meds!

Baby 1 8hrs
Baby 2 4hrs
Baby 3 4hrs
Baby 4 2hrs
Baby 5 1hr

With my first pregnancy I didn’t use any pain medications I was actually already in the hospital for early stages of Pre-eclampsia and my contractions weren’t consistant so the nurse on that night didn’t think I was in actual labor. And that week there was quiet a few doctors out of town. So the doctor I had was the ER doctor and and he ran back and fourth for five hours to make sure I was okay. That was 11 hours of start to finish and about 45 mins of pushing.

My second pregnancy was 5 hours start to finish with 20 mins of pushing. And I used a shot of Demerol. It tookd the edge off and I could relax a little bit to actually help me breath and gain control of my breathing so I didn’t tense up as much.

My third one was four hours of labor. I actually went in for doctors appt. and blood pressure was up and so they wanted me to go to the hospital to do the non-stress test. But that morning I was feeling contractions but didn’t think it was going to amount to anything. But they decided when I was up there to go a head and induce. I just remember my doctor coming in with what he called worlds smallest tampon or worlds biggiest sperm. They said that it should take 3 hours for it to start working, but within twenty minutes I was having contractions one right after the other. That was 4 hours and 10 mins pushing.

I’m on my fourth pregnancy and due in June. Kind of wondering what labor will be like this time cause they seem to be getting a lot faster. Ohh yeah my last two labors I really wanted the epidural but they guy that was on call all the time was always in surgry so I never made it to get it done.
