what are some pro’s and cons of pain relieving drugs in childbirth?

Does an epi-dural mean the baby is born a bit groggy with drugs in their system? does it make it difficult to establish breast feeding? What are some other drugs that can be used instead of an edidural? Is it true that having drugs during labour increases chances of tearing or episiotomy because you are less in-tune with when and how to move your body effectively? Has anyone had ‘gas’ during labour for pain relief. Is it common for people to do it 100% natural with no drugs?

I did 100% natural birth, and I had a couple of people mentioning how unusually alert my daughter looked the first couple of days. If there really was a causal relationship I don’t know. With the help of a good bath tub and a massaging husband, most of the pain is pretty endurable.
I did tear a bit. Tearing is more likely, if you give birth lying down, while a more upright position helps to avoid tearing. After four hours of pushing, I was way to tired for an upright position, so I ripped a bit. – Anyways, any drugs that force you to give birth in a lying position will make it more likely to tear.
