Sports injuries are very common with any type of sport. The trick is to learn what injury is likely to occur and knowing how to avoid it. Sports injuries cannot be avoided, but it is always better to take good care of the body to keep it safe from injury. The most important thing that can be done is to ensure a good physical condition and fitness level before starting to play golf. However, a little bit of care and good health and fitness can reduce the number of injuries that you may have.
1. Back Injuries:
Back injuries are the most common type of injuries suffered by a golfer. This is because the game of golf involves a lot of swinging with clubs and walking long distances. A proper conditioning of the back muscles will help to avoid such problems. It is essential to take good rest after a game of golf, so that the back muscles have the time to rejuvenate. Use of ice packs, muscle rubs and back braces will help to alleviate the pain in case there is any injury. A chiropractic alignment or a massage can be considered by those golfers who play professionally, or those who play continuous games.
2. Tennis Elbow or Golfer’s Elbow:
Tennis elbow, also known as Golfer’s elbow in golfing language is another common injury. There is a minor difference between tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow; tennis elbow affects the outside of the upper arm whereas golfer’s elbow affects the inner arm. It will typically happen to those who start suddenly playing too much golf. Like, for instance, in the case of golfers who enter into a tournament, when they otherwise play a single game a month. Such players are potentially at risk for developing the injury.
3. Shoulder Injuries:
Due to continuous swinging of the golf clubs, the shoulder muscles are prone to injury. Although shoulder injury cannot be totally avoided, care can be taken to see that the muscles are stretched and warmed up before starting the golf game. Ensure that you take proper care of the body by resting it in between games.
4. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:
Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs due to repetition stress. Numerous games of golf played over several months continuously, may cause this injury. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can be a serious injury causing incapacitation and requiring surgery for correction. However, if it is detected at an early stage, using a brace will alleviate the problem. The symptoms do not show up easily, but ensure to wear a wrist brace in case there is any wrist pain.
Golf injuries are a part of life for most golfers. However, proper exercise and muscle toning, maintaining a good fitness level and taking proper rest will help to avoid the discomfort and pain of golfing injuries.
